My 5 top top healthy tips
If I could only make 5 changes to benefit your health what would they be?
What could help you lose weight, resolve acid reflux and manage your diarrhoea, constipation and bloating?
No it’s not starvation!
One
Cut out all ultra-processed foods.
This isn’t convenience food by the way.
It’s not the tin of baked beans where I understand all the ingredients or the tin of chopped tomatoes.
It’s the food where I don’t understand the ingredients.
What does Xanthan gum do?
Why does food need a colour added? probably because if the colour wasn’t added it would look grey and sickly.
A bit like fake tan for food.
So what’s really wrong with processed foods, apart from the weird ingredients, the colouring, the high sugar and the unhealthy fat?
The cost!
If I buy a whole chicken.
I can have a roast on a Sunday.
A salad on a Monday.
A curry on a Tuesday.
And if I add cooked lentils and frozen spinach to the leftover Tuesday curry, I can freeze the leftovers for when I can’t be bothered.
4 meals have got to be cheaper than one ready meal, don’t you think?
Two
Filter your water. Why?
Your water from the tap contains;
+PFAS these are a group of man made unhealthy forever chemicals.
These substances are linked to various serious health issues.
+Chlorine, I can smell the chlorine in my tap water, it tastes vile.
I’m not swimming! What bacteria are the water companies trying to eradicate?
+Fluoride, it’s up to the local authority how much fluoride is added.
Do you trust your local authority to manage your health?
+Heavy metals.
Your water has travelled a long way through very old pipes.
A quick Google search will give you lots and lots of articles on each of these issues.
So what can you do about it?
Using a water filter is a very good start.
I use ‘pH on-the-go', it removes chlorine, heavy metals, fluoride and other pollutants.
The health benefits of drinking water are it;
+Reduces hunger.
+Reduces fatigue.
+Helps with constipation.
+Reduces acid reflux
+Reduces gout
My extra tip
If you have diarrhoea then you need to add an electrolyte to your filtered water.
Number Three
Eat fat.
Healthy fat does not make you fat.
I should really end there….
What are healthy fats?
Avocados.
Nut.
Seeds.
Fatty fish.
Olive oil.
Coconut oil.
These fats can help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and lower triglycerides.
Healthy fats are good for;
+Brain function.
+Weight Management.
+Nutrient Absorption (extra benefit … gives you more energy)
+Reduces inflammation.
Just a final word on fats. My sister recently told me she had stopped using the fat spray recommended by Slimming World, why?
Because it had taken the coating off her nonstick pans and air fryer.
That cannot be good for your guts.
Number Four
Eat enough protein.
For a 70kg person that is about 6 palm-sized portions of protein.
Scale this up and down depending on your current weight.
Protein is good for;
+ Keeping hunger at bay.
+Essential for healthy muscles, bones, and skin.
+Regulates hormones.
+Supports the immune system.
+Repairs and produces new cells.
Vegetarian sources include;
Cheese.
Eggs.
Yoghurts.
Nuts.
Seeds.
Beans.
Lentils.
You know the animal sources… Preferably these are grass-fed and free-range
Number Five
Eat enough plants.
Eat as big a variety as possible.
Eat as many colours as possible.
Add butter or olive oil and black pepper to your vegetables to help with nutrient absorption, increasing energy
If you have a sensitive tummy then only eat salads if you have the time and a quiet space.
Raw vegetables can be hard to digest.
If you don’t like vegetables, buy frozen and ‘hide’ them in your curry, stew, soup, chilli, and pasta sauces.
Don’t forget to add herbs and spices. Maybe hang back on chillis as they can be hard on the tummy
