Your wellness vision

I am a visual person. I learn by having post-its stuck on my walls, I like one-page graphics to remind me of a 1-hour lecture, and I like to have a plan of where I want to be in the future.

In my mid 20’s and early 30’s I was a single working mum, working full-time and studying accountancy part-time. It was hard going.

When I had time to reflect on why I was pushing myself so hard, normally while ironing…. I would imagine myself qualifying, and getting my pass certificate.

My daydreams, we talked about daydreaming in my last post, were extremely detailed.

I thought about what it would feel like to pass my exams, what I would wear to the graduation, how my family would feel about my success, and what I would do with all my free time.

This daydream, which eventually became a reality, got me through the tough times, the 5 am starts and the boredom of learning something because you had to rather than because it was interesting.

The important thing is that visualising ‘ME’ in the future helped me to get to my future

Can you imagine yourself in 6 months? or in 1 year?

If you can’t let’s work backwards. Imagine yourself at 80, will you be in the same situation you are now? That’s not possible, right? Children grow up, you retire, you develop different interests and relationships change. So if that is your reality at 80, when did the change happen, 70? 60? 50?

So we know that things will change. In an ideal world, what do you want from your future? Don’t worry about how you are going to get there right now, just picture yourself.

What would you like your health to be like?

  • Do you have time to exercise every day?

  • Do you have the energy and fitness to exercise?

  • Would you like to join an exercise group and make new friends?

  • Do you have a personal challenge that has been in the back of your mind forever? A marathon, a couch to 5k?

  • Would you like to learn to dance? persuaded your other half to join you?

  • How does that make you feel?

What do you look like?

  • What clothes will you wear?

  • Do you have a favourite outfit you have seen on yourself or someone else?

  • What colour is it?

  • How does it fit?

  • How does it make you feel?

What is your lifestyle?

  • Do you have the energy to play with your children/grandchildren?

  • Can you take that walking holiday?

  • Can you walk to the beach, or go out on day trips?

  • Do you sleep all night?

The next step is to think about your 5 top reasons for wanting this vision of you in the future.

Be honest about the reasons you want this future. No one has to know what your reasons are, what will get you out of bed and what will motivate you to change a habit.

What will your life be like in the future?

Maybe your 5 reasons will take time to become clear to you, there is no rush, and no time limit,  your reasons can change as you realise your goals.

Finally, do you want this vision to live in your head?

Do you want to share the vision with someone you trust?

Do you want a vision board? An area just for you, to put your photos, pictures, quotes, and stickers on.

Describe you in the future.

“I am the right weight”

“I feel energised”

“ I love my life”

“I can make healthy choices.”

What is your vision?

Whatever you decide this is your daydream place…..

So what’s next?

How do you make sure that your vision becomes your reality?

Start working on your vision today.

Start working on a healthier more confident more energised you..

It doesn’t have to be big changes, after all, sometimes it's the small changes that make all the difference.

Swap one of your chocolate snacks for a piece of fruit

Swap cereal and toast for a poached egg on toast

Swap pasta or rice for extra vegetables

Walk to the shops, take the stairs or dance to George Michael for 10 minutes while you are cooking ( I know its always George Michael)

You don’t have to go it alone.

In the 1960’s/70’s the feminist movement adopted the slogan, “Behind every great man there is a great woman”.
